Car tires are a continues waste stream that can be sourced locally in every part of the world. In Flanders car tires are recycled by Rubber Recycling. Each year 1,4 million car tires are recycled at the facilities of Rubber Recycling in Pelt. Because used car tires contain heavy metals they have to be processed in a regulated environment. In Belgium the recycling market for car tires is organized by Recytyre and regulated by Ovam. Applications for recycled car tires include rubber tiles for playgrounds. Research and development focuses on rubber-asphalt composites for road construction and carbon black pigment extracted from recycled car tires through pyrolysis. In the CS studio Custom Territory recycled rubber is used to make shoe soles.
